I just got back from a 5-day mountain biking trip in Whistler, BC with 10 of my good friends. If you aren't aware, Whistler is known as one of the top mountain biking destinations in the world and people travel from all over to check out the trails.
And the views cannot be beat either!
Mountain biking is one of my passions (like, if I'm not at my desk utilizing my tech ninja skills or on the phone with clients, I'm on my bike!) and the mountains are my favorite place to be, so this was definitely my idea of a perfect vacation. And it was truly an incredible experience both from a riding standpoint (I mean, seriously some of the best trails I've been on) and being surrounded by some top-notch people.
If you were to come across our group of friends, you would think that we've all known each other for decades. The ease at which we get along and the stories we share make it seem like we've hung out our entire lives.
I've been home for 2 days already and my stomach still hurts from laughing!
However, I didn't know anyone in this group until just 3 years ago.
I moved to the Chicago area from Colorado in 2014 after living there for a year. It had been my lifelong dream to live in Colorado. But due to a job loss and a long distance relationship back in Chicago, I decided to move back to the area, but hours from where I had lived before.
At the time, I was pretty nervous about transitioning away from my dream and the outdoor paradise that I had been living in to the flatlands of the Midwest. I worried that I'd struggle to find other like-minded people who wanted to be outside and ride bikes as much as I do.
I had struggled with this in the past and was concerned about starting over again trying to make those connections.
However, as the Universe usually does, it responded to my desire to find these people - and just a few weeks after moving here, I ended up meeting Mike, the owner of a local bike shop. At the time, he was trying to recruit his friends to create a weekly night bike ride on some local trails and invited me to join them. I decided to show up for the first ride.
That ended up being one of the best decisions I could have made.
In fact, it was life-changing.
Even though I was the only female in the group and was completely new to the area, they welcomed me as though I'd been a lifelong friend.
And those first few months, which should have been a difficult transition, were smooth and so ridiculously fun.
While I did miss the mountain views that Colorado had to offer, the friendships that I developed were some of the best I've ever made. I felt like I had always been part of this group.
Because of this group, so much of my life has changed for the better. Not only do I have people to adventure and ride bikes with all the time, I also...
Started my business. The owner of the bike shop that started our group got me involved in his business which opened my eyes to the world of internet marketing and coaching. While I had wanted to start a business for years, it wasn't until I met this group that I actually did. Not only did Mike help open up the door for me but the entire group has been incredibly supportive of it since day 1.
Met the graphic artist who now works on my team. One of the wives of the guys I ride with also became one of my closest friends. Turns out, she's also incredibly creative and was an easy addition to my team which has only added to the success of myself and my clients.
Met the guy I am dating now. Like attracts like and through this group I met a really great and genuine guy who is also into everything I'm into (something I'd always wanted).
Became a better cyclist. No joke - my friends that I rode with in Colorado have commented many times that it appeared I had to move to the Midwest to learn how to ride my bike better.
And the reason for this is - most of these guys in our group have been riding for 20 years, while I've only been riding for 4. Because they are better than I am, I've been able to push myself to try things I wouldn't have tried normally.
Experienced authentic compassion first hand. I went through a very difficult time in my personal life right after meeting this group... due to an abrupt end to a relationship, I ended up homeless.
All of them stepped up to support me in various ways...from offering to let me store my belongings with them to letting me move in with them until I got back on my feet. I had gone through tough times before and had never experienced compassion on this level. Their compassion and dedication to supporting me through that honestly changed the way I prioritize things in my life.
Learned to let go of toxic people in my life. Through my friendships with this tribe, I learned that I had quite a few toxic people in my life that were trying to pull me down into their negativity. Being an empath and someone who always wants to help, I didn't realize how much these people were bringing me down. This group taught me what I really deserve and desire out of friendships and I was able to let those toxic people go...and I became better at not letting any others in as well.
And interestingly enough, as soon as I let those toxic people go, I attracted so many more incredible people into my life. And they have only added to how full my heart feels every day.
And these are just a few examples. But the point I'm really trying to get to here is that in the past, I always felt like I was either having to create an environment or be something that I wasn't in order to have friendships.
That always felt misaligned, it drained me, and probably led to some of the toxic people in my life.
You have likely heard the phrase, "You are a product of the 5 people you spend the most time with." And that couldn't be more true for me.
In fact, when I asked this weekend why I never moved back to my dreamland of Colorado when I had the chance a couple years ago, I simply answered, "Because there is no substitute for friendships like these."
Even back then, only a few months in to the friendships I knew I had hit the jackpot in the friend department and because it took me over 30 years to find that, I wake up grateful for that fact every day. It would be incredibly difficult for me to give up.
Does this mean I'll never move?
No, but for now I don't have this pull and call to go live in the mountains like I did prior to meeting this group.
If you are feeling like you don't have that tribe or group around you to build you up and support you - keep looking. Your tribe is out there and you'll know when you've met them.
And don't settle or accept anything less than what you truly want.
Remember that life's short; dare to live your dreams!
